By Anonymous (Wilmington, DE - December 6, 2002) -- With HDTV acquisition all the rage, the producers of two new action documentaries, both currently in production, will be offering select clips for license. What's the big deal? The team specializes in emergency response, and they're offering some of the first HDTV footage dealing specifically with firefighters and firefighting.
Amy Steelman-Angeli and Lou Angeli are Philadelphia area filmmakers, whose experience as firefighters and EMT's, have allowed them to specialize in programming dealing with the emergency services. Their work is dramatic and has been seen on every major network and around the globe. Recently, the pair released "Bound By Courage" (1x52), a program documenting their 16 days working at Ground Zero.
For safety reasons, "Courage" was produced using DVCam and MiniDV. But in two new docs, "When All Else Fails!" and "Whirlybirds-2003", Amy and Lou have made the hyper jump to HDTV.
Lou Angeli has been documenting fires since 1981, when he filmed a huge warehouse blaze in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. As a volunteer firefighter, he carried his old Ikegami HL-79 camera right into the burning building, bringing viewers a unique perspective of firefighting - from the firefighters' point of view. He's been doing it ever since.
During the month of December the team is busy acquiring b-roll of firefighters, rescue personnel, air med evac, and high angle rescue for the two new documentaries. These scenes will serve as the basis for their own shows, but both Amy and Lou realize that HDTV of racing fire trucks and ship-to-ship helicopter scenes might be helpful to producers of other programs.
Amy, who began her career in television after meeting Lou during a taping at her Indiana firehouse, is absolutely stunned by the results they've gotten with HDTV. "It's a helluva step up from the palm held Sony I've been carrying in my firecoat pocket" she notes.
Amy's especially thrilled with the scenes that they've recorded aboard fire engines as they race through the streets to the alarm. "Firefighters know that riding to an emergency is an adrenaline rush like no other." Amy says, "But this is the first time (using HDTV) that I've been able to convey that rush to the viewer." The footage speaks for itself.
Although the Angeli's will be down-converting scenes for their own programs to NTSC, the HDTV images of America's Bravest are being offered for license. "I recall that one of the first motion picture films released was entitled, 'The Life of a Fireman'", Lou says. Wouldn't it be wild if future production students remembered the Angeli's HDTV firefighting clips in the same way.

CONEXANT ADDS NEW HDTV VIDEO ENCODERS TO PORTFOLIO OF BROADCAST VIDEO SOLUTIONS
New Encoders Allow Users to View PC, DVD, Game Console or Set-Top Box Content on Digital or Analog Televisions
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Jan. 14, 2002 – Conexant Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor system solutions for communications applications, today expanded its broadcast video offering to include encoders that cut the cost of supporting TV-out for displaying high-performance high-definition television (HDTV) content in PC systems, progressive DVD players, performance game consoles and other emerging applications.
Conexant’s new CX25872/3 and CX25874/5 products build upon the company’s proven video encoder solutions to combine adaptive flicker-filtering, HDTV output capability and true international support including the latest copy-protection features for digital content. The video encoders enable users, worldwide, to display high-quality content from PCs, set-top boxes, progressive DVD players and video game consoles on either analog or digital television sets.
“Conexant has one of the industry’s strongest product and technology portfolios in key emerging digital broadband access and media-processing markets, backed by a reputation for offering high-quality video solutions at competitive prices,” said Greg Fischer, vice president of computer products for Conexant’s Digital Infotainment Division. “With the addition of our new CX25872/3 and CX25874/5 products, customers can quickly bring to market new TV-out solutions that include the latest adaptive flicker-filtering and HDTV features, at price points for every segment.”
Conexant is the market share leader in video-encoder chips for the PC desktop add-in card market. Conexant’s proven video encoder solutions have helped popularize PC TV-out in PC systems offered by Compaq, Dell, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and many others, and in PC add-in cards offered by manufacturers such as Guillemot, Leadtek and Visiontek. In addition, the company’s previous-generation CX25871 video encoder solution was selected by Microsoft Corporation to connect the Xbox™ video game system to both digital and traditional analog television sets worldwide.
Technical Details
Conexant’s CX25872/3 and CX25874/5 video encoders fully support all features of Conexant’s previous-generation encoders, the CX25870/1 and the market’s most popular PC video encoder, the Bt868/869. Key features include high performance TV-out capability with 10-bit DACs, support for resolutions from 320 x 200 to 1024 x 768, and programmable overscan compensation capability ranging from zero to 25 percent.
The CX25872/3 and CX25874/5 provide manufacturers worldwide with the highest level of integration, smallest footprint, and lowest bill of materials cost and component count offered in a single-chip solution. Each new video encoder supports National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) and Phase Alternate Line (PAL) analog formats, and Sequential Couleur avec Memoire (SECAM) output.
Conexant’s family of encoders was the first to offer true worldwide support for WSS 16:9 per the Electronics Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ) CPR-1204 and the radio sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) BT.119, which are popular analog standards in Europe and Japan. The video encoders support CCIR656 and CCIR601 standards, which are important video standards required by applications such as PC graphics cards, set-top boxes and progressive-scan DVD players.
Conexant’s CX25874/5 video encoder raises the performance level of its CX25872/3 solution with the addition of true HDTV display capability. This includes all of Conexant’s proven HDTV technology for viewing PC content on digital television sets, plus the addition of full support for the 525p/625p copy protection standard. The CX25874/5 integrates the CGMS standards and supports all major Advanced Television
Systems Committee (ATSC) standards including 480p, 720p and 1080i, and actually provides the tri-level syncs and broad pulses required to connect directly to a digital television set.
In addition to 525p/625p digital copy-protection support, the CX25873 and CX25875 are fully compliant with Macrovision 7.1.L1, the latest analog copy protection standard. The CX25872 and CX25874 are designed for applications that do not require Macrovision copy protection.
Pricing and Availability
The CX25872/3 and CX25874/5 are sampling now with volume production scheduled in the third fiscal quarter, and are packaged in a 64-pin thin quad flat pack (TQFP) making them the smallest, most integrated single-chip encoders available. The CX25872/3 is priced at $7.00 in quantities of 10,000. The CX25874/5 is priced at $10.00 in quantities of 10,000.
